Diving in mexican cenotes
What is a cenote?
It is the word from the Yucatec Mayan dialect which refers to an underwater cave, a sinkhole formation in freshwater. Cenotes are characteristic of this part of the Yucatan Peninsula. Cenotes a great for diving since there is great visibility, up to 500 ft and depths up to 30 ft.
Cenotes are situated in Riviera Maya, which is a couple of hours away from the hotel zone in Canunc. Cenote diving is therefore cavern diving. Although you do not requiere a cave diving certification, you do requiere to dive in cenotes with a profesional guide and dive master for your safety. Most of dive operators in Cancun, are prepared to dive in Mexicos Cenotes.
What do you require? Basically any dive operator that visits Cenotes for a a one day trip, in which you will have a 2 tank dive. The most famous cenote site is Dos Ojos (or 2 eyes).
If you havent tried cave diving this is a great opportunity to inmerse yourself in the Mexican Cenotes, since they are safe and do not require a cavern certification.
